Located in Irondale, the Ruffner Mountain Irondale Trailhead beckons hikers with well-maintained paths leading to breathtaking overlooks and natural features. This trailhead offers access to the Ridge & Valley trail, where adventurers can choose between a challenging ascent to the limestone quarry and Hawk’s View which offers one of the best panoramic vistas of Jones Valley and downtown Birmingham.
For those seeking a more vigorous trek, the trail heading northeast guides hikers through a series of valleys toward Crusher 3 and the nature center, completing a rewarding loop via the Quarry trail. The trailhead’s proximity to parking at the ballfields makes it an ideal starting point for both casual walkers and seasoned hikers, and the opportunity for trailblazing adds an element of exploration to every visit. It’s no surprise this spot is cherished by many for its natural beauty and invigorating routes.

2 years agoVery nice trail area. You do have to pay about $6 for parking unless you're a member. Trails are many, and they are well maintained and long. They've got bathrooms, a vending machine, and a nature center. I will come again for sure.

2 years agoPark at the ballfields (don't forget your membership hangtag) and cross Ruffner Road for the trailhead. Following the trail for 25 yards you will meet the Ridge & Valley trail. Walking in NW direction (left),you have to overcome a short but steep slope to get to the limestone quarry (~15 min) or instead of stopping at the quarry, you continue up the mountain to Hawk's View one of the best overlook over Jones Valley and in the distant Birmingham's downtown. If you follow the trail in NE direction (right) you will walk through a series of valleys, which makes this a pretty strenuous hike to Crusher 3 and the nature center. Both directions will get you to the Quarry trail allowing for a nice loop hike.
