Bell Smith Springs is a scenic spot, but there are a few things I wish I'd known before going in September. Getting there: The last 2 miles are on gravel road with lots of potholes. You'll need to drive slowly, and it added 15-20 minutes to our trip, so plan for that. Signage and navigation: There's very little signage in the parking areas, and finding the trailhead took some trial and error. After we finished our hike, several other visitors asked us where to go. The trails themselves aren't well marked either, and there's no cell service. Download offline maps before you arrive. Trails: I'd rate them moderately difficult. There are some very steep, narrow steps that take care to navigate, so wear good footwear. Health warning for swimmers and pet owners: This is a popular swimming spot, so please be aware that our dog contracted leptospirosis after getting some of the water in her mouth there. Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection spread through water contaminated by the urine of infected animals, and it can also infect humans. If you swim or let your pets in the water, take precautions, keep cuts covered, avoid swallowing water, and see a doctor or vet if anyone becomes ill afterward. Overall, the scenery is worth the trip, but better signage and trail markings would make a big difference.
