Breathtaking views of the flinthills.
Biked this trail for the 1st time, will definitely make the trip to do this again. The flint hills did not disappoint, beautiful scenery. The trail has great signage in most areas and there are mile markers between Pomona and Osawatomie (helpful for newcomers). There was more shading and wind than I anticipated. LOVED the views and the green milkweed.
We rode the Flint Hills, and the Katy Trail to St Louis; no issues. Council Grove is an excellent and Charming town to start off at. You can park at the Riverwalk trailhead, just let the local goverment know so they can tell the police to watch your car. we parked for two weeks. You connect to the Katy with the Rock island Spur and local roads. Pleasent hill is a trip if you are camping. Still don't know how it is supposed to be done.
We recently rode the Flint Hills Trail as part of a 400 mile bicycle tour from Humboldt, circling through the Flint Hills and utilizing the Flint Hills and Prairie Spirit Trails for half of the tour mileage. The Flint Hills segment was by far the prettiest section, although we were plagued by many flat tires brought on by an abundance of Goat Head thorns. My advice is to take whatever precautions you can to armour your tires if you ride this trail. Strong tire casings, tube protection, and tire sealants are all good ideas, along with the ability to handle any trouble that arises. We also camped at Pomona State Park and enjoyed our experience there. *Update Oct/2025: We rode this route again. No flats, & many parts of the trail have been resurfaced. It was a great ride.
Beautiful and fairly easy hike. Not paved. Good for bikes. Not crowded.
