My friends in Memphis picked Amelia Gene’s for dinner while I was visiting from out of town, and they absolutely nailed it. 🤍 The atmosphere is gorgeous, the food was incredible, the cocktails were delicious, and the service was wonderful. Every detail felt thoughtful and elevated, but the experience still felt warm and inviting. It was such a beautiful dinner and exactly the kind of restaurant that makes a trip feel even more memorable. My Memphis girls definitely understood the assignment! ✨🥂 I would absolutely recommend Amelia Gene’s and can’t wait to go back.
My husband and I went here to celebrate our marriage anniversary. We ended up wishing we'd gone to our regular celebratory restaurant We had complementary champagnes; a plus. Afterwards, we formally ordered cocktails. I ordered a French 76 and hubby ordered a Peach Sangria. His was good..very light which we think it was supposed to be. Mine arrived created with an onion or garlic infused vodka which gave it a savory note. Not expected, and could have been construed as a mistake..except, when I ordered a second one, it arrived the same way. (You see, whether this drink was a mistake or not; I actually found it interesting and enjoyable so I ordered another.) I think they should give it a name "AG Special" or something and put it on the menu. The seafood dishes we had at beginning of service were good, but we felt a little too reliant on butter to achieve that result..without having the word "Butter" mentioned in the title or description of the dish. Had it been mentioned..the butteriness wouldn't have been so surprising. It was, overall, pretty good. I had the Filet Migon as a main and hubby had Boar. We were asked how we'd like our meats cooked. I requested "well done"; hubby requested his boar "medium". (A first I've ever heard of this by the way, as pork is normally always cooked to well done.) Well, the meats were not cooked to preference at all. My steak was was between medium rare and medium..leaning more towards rare. Hubby's boar was also medium rare, leaning more to rare the lower he went down the bone. Neither of us like meats returned to kitchen for further cooking after they've rested as it usually dries and toughens it; which was the offer mentioned. There was never an offer to have the dish entirely reprepared. We can eat meats this way, but it's not our preference, which we'd clearly specified. So this read as a failure; either on the waiter's part or the chef's part. We aren't sure of whose fault, but we're definitely sure of fault. The carrot cake dessert was quite tasty. But not good enough for us to return to this restaurant on that alone. My husband left a review leaning heavily towards the waiter for the failures of our experience. ..The next day we received communication from the restaurant manager wanting to know of the event firsthand. Our experience was discussed at length. She was very pleasant..and her solution was to invite us to return to the restaurant at a future date and give them a second chance. ..An invitation that we may take them up on. We haven't decided yet. If so, we hope to have a much better experience.
Our experience at Amelia Gene’s was, in a word, disappointing. To set the stage, my wife & I went there to celebrate our twenty-first wedding anniversary. We traditionally go to Erling Jensen’s for our anniversaries but this year we decided to try someplace new. We ordered drinks. I had the white peach sangria & my wife had a French 76. My wife said it was good but tasted different than she was used to. I tasted it & it had a distinct hint of garlic/onion, so I think it was made with garlic infused vodka. We asked the waiter about it & he said the bartender must have made a mistake. Mistake or not, it was surprisingly good and my wife suggested making it a signature cocktail. As far as the food is concerned, for the price point, it was okay. Not great but adequate. For starters, we had the Fresh Maine Lobster Tail and the Fried Gnocchi with Lobster Claws. Both dishes were good although my wife & I felt butter was doing more of the heavy lifting than it should have for the Fried Gnocchi. For our main course, I had the wild boar & my wife had the filet mignon. I’ve had boar multiple times before, so I know what to expect. The flavor was good, but the meat itself was sinewier than I had come to expect. The waiter did mention it was going to be leaving the menu so that could mean the source had a great but limited supply or that the supply didn’t meet the chef’s standards & won’t be reordered. It would have been good had the waiter known which was the case so, if the latter, he could have steered me to another offering. My wife’s filet mignon was ordered well done but when it arrived at the table it was a very dark reddish-pink medium that was close to medium rare territory. The waiter offered to take it back for more time on the grill but, in our experience, this results in an overdone steak rather than a well done one and there is a difference. The carrot cake dessert was delicious, and, despite the flaws, our evening of celebration was still quite enjoyable.
Birthday evening, post-theater drinks, small plates, and dessert. High-top near the bar was perfect for the four of us. Appetizers, small plates , dessert, and service was exceptional as usual ! They had sold through their chocolate molten cake, but were able to produce an off menu chocolate turtle cake for the birthday girl - well done. Our son requested an Affogato after snacking - not on menus but the service staff delivered once again… our favorite Memphis dining for a reason !!
