February 6, 2026 | Blevins Gap Nature Preserve (North) Loop Abby and I arrived at the Fanning Trailhead around 06:50 AM to a crisp 30°F morning. The air was sharp, but with a promised high in the 60s later today. We set out on a 7-mile clockwise loop. While "tons" of fallen leaves blanketed the path—making for some hidden footing—the trails were otherwise in great shape and well-marked. The forest was ours alone for nearly the entire hike; it wasn't until we neared the parking lot at the end that we encountered (total) five people and three dogs heading in. Everyone was courteous, adding a nice social touch to the end of a quiet morning. The trail offered some incredible sights today: Needles Ice, Lichen, Turkey Tail Fungi, lovely Rock Formations, and "Big" Trees. A truly restorative morning immersed in peace and quiet. Huge thanks to the Land Trust of North Alabama for maintaining such a gem. 👍👍👍

The Land Trust creates a huge contribution to Madison County. Their original goal was to purchase land so the mountain backdrop of Huntsville wasn't completely developed. Their preservation has created hundreds of acres of hiking trails and access to unique waterfall, rock overlooks and clean flowing streams. A big thanks to the Land Trust. Make a donation today!

Hidden gem of Huntsville! Don't be afraid of the church! Drive past it and discover nature! Us Dawgs come up here 5 days a week to see how the creek is doing and enjoy this gorgeous landscape. Beautifully marked trails make it clear! There's a great easy jones valley loop in addition to more ambitious hikes if you don't have many dogs with you. We saw a HUGE black racer on the trail that slithered past after we hiked! Remember those snek friends want nothing to do with you if you don't want nothing to do with them. Gorgeous trail, wonderful maintenance/bridges, and alabama ain't so bad. Thanks land trust for all you do to keep us sane here
