Chapman Mountain Nature Preserve offers a well-maintained nature preserve experience in Huntsville, AL, perfect for hiking, bird watching, and enjoying native wildlife. This preserve features a variety of trails ranging from easy to moderately challenging, including the popular Bulldog and Terry Trails. Visitors often highlight the bird photography opportunities made possible by the thoughtfully designed water spring created by the American Audubon Society, where sightings of colorful warblers are common. The preserve also includes an open disc golf course and smaller side trails, making it a versatile destination for outdoor activities. Notably, the area is home to timber rattlesnakes, which are shy and add an element of natural wonder for those exploring the woods. This preserve is highly recommended for those seeking a peaceful retreat amidst diverse flora and fauna close to the city.

4 months agoExcellent preserve. Trails are well maintained. Part of Terry Trail is a little challenging, but the rest of the trails are easy. My only critique of the Land Trust is the runoff streams near the disc golf course need Beaver Dam Analogs or check dams to stop erosion and slow down water. I recommend this preserve highly.

4 months agoI went for bird watching. American Audobon Society created a wonderful water spring that has wooden windows for bird photography. Saw some beautiful warblers there. It was awesome!

8 months agoThis is a wonderful little preserve on the north side of Huntsville. It's also about 10 minutes from my house so it's close enough for me to train here for longer hikes. I generally will loop the bulldog Trail and the Terry Trail to get extra mileage. There's also a nice open disc golf course with some small side trails. As you can see by the photos, this is timber rattlesnake country. This one was rather large, about 4 and 1/2 ft, but they are very shy and my son and I just watched him crawl off into the woods. I counted 14 rattles so this guy is definitely an older specimen but still beautiful.

2 years agoMulti use track in the Land Trust collection of properties. The trails may be too short for hardcore hikers, but the diversity of the foliage, the great pavilion and other activities (disk golf) make it an attractive spot for the entire family. Water feature with blind for bird photos is up and running. This tract will only before better as time goes along!
