in the last weekI left the Austin Aquarium feeling deeply uncomfortable and genuinely worried about the care and well-being of the animals. While the concept may sound appealing, once inside it’s hard to ignore the signs that many of the animals appear stressed, lethargic, or kept in conditions that don’t feel appropriate or enriching. Several enclosures seemed inadequate in size or setup, and there was very little educational information that inspired confidence in proper animal care or conservation. Instead of feeling like a place focused on learning and respect for wildlife, it felt more like entertainment at the animals’ expense. I wanted this to be a positive experience, but I walked away concerned rather than inspired. I would encourage anyone considering a visit—especially families with children—to do some research first and think carefully about whether this is the kind of animal experience they want to support.
