Came out here today specifically to catch grasshoppers. Unfortunately, the grasshoppers have apparently formed some kind of organized resistance movement. I saw approximately 47 of them, but every single one disappeared the moment I approached. Very coordinated. Suspicious. The trail itself was beautiful. The historical significance of the Oregon Trail is apparently that thousands of pioneers crossed this exact area, while I spent 45 minutes crouching behind a bush whispering “come here little guy” to an insect that clearly had military training. At one point I thought I caught one, but it was a leaf. Then I found a grasshopper sitting completely still and approached it slowly. It jumped away. I pursued. It jumped again. I pursued again. Eventually I realized I had walked approximately half a mile off the trail chasing the same grasshopper. I believe the grasshopper was leading me somewhere. I don't know where. I don't think I was supposed to find out. 5/5 for scenery. 1/5 for grasshopper availability. Would return with reinforcements.
Ruts are not as close to the trailhead as it seems online never saw the ruts as they were too far out for our kids to walk
You have a few options when it comes to trails to walk. Always bring water
UPDATE : GO TO THE NATIONAL HISTORIC OREGON TRAIL INTERPRETIVE CENTER IN BAKER CITY OREGON.... Where am I supposed to look for the wagon wheel ruts???? Signage very vague... Even escape rooms give you clues. On stopping people and asking...THERE ARE NO WAGON WHEEL RUTS HERE!!!!!Waste of time. If I just wanted to hike I would pick a prettier place
