Located conveniently behind the Vestavia Hills library, the Boulder Canyon Nature Trail is a charming park that offers a refreshing retreat from city life. This short loop trail features a variety of terrain, including some slippery slopes and a side trail leading to a peaceful creek and a modest waterfall nestled within a rugged, wild gorge. Though the waterfall may not be grand, the natural beauty and raw landscape create a captivating atmosphere for visitors.
Walking along Patton Creek to complete the loop requires sturdy footwear, as the path can turn adventurous, appealing to those who enjoy a bit of challenge on a casual hike. Recent repairs have improved trail accessibility, but some areas could benefit from further maintenance, making it a wonderful spot for community projects. Overall, this trail is a lovely destination for nature lovers seeking a quiet park experience within Vestavia Hills.

2 years agoUpdate 9/28/23 The bridge has been repaired (replaced) :-) The trailhead is behind the Vestavia library and you have access through the library or standing in front of the library turn to the right and walk around the building. The park is a nice escape from the city right inside the city. The loop trail is short and includes some slippery slopes. The waterfall side trail is a short climb down to the creek and while the "waterfall" is not spectacular the gorge is rough and beautifully wild. Walking alongside Patton Creek to finish the loop requires good shoes and quickly turns into a bit more of an adventure than most would enjoy on a leisurely afternoon stroll. The bridge felt a bit elastic and inspecting the wood, one weight bearing beam is rotted out and needs to be replaced. All in all a lovely place that could use some TLC (eagle scout projects). Many posts tell the story of a former natural trail and some stairs are a bit dicey.
