Bear Valley – Golden View Trailhead in Anchorage offers a rewarding hiking experience with stunning vistas that captivate nature lovers. The trail to McHugh Peak is known for its challenging first mile, which is steep but becomes more manageable past Grandview, making it a perfect option for those who enjoy a bit of a workout paired with breathtaking scenery.
Hikers praise the panoramic views of Anchorage cityscape, the Turnagain Arm, and the majestic Chugach Mountain range, which are among the finest in the region. The trail is also ideal for families seeking a light to medium hike, with the added bonus of prime blueberry picking during September, adding a seasonal delight to your outdoor adventure.
While some areas can be muddy and snow patches may linger on the mountain, the overall experience is enriched by the spectacular natural surroundings and a sense of peaceful escape. This hiking area is a must-visit for anyone looking to explore Anchorage’s outdoor beauty and enjoy invigorating trails with rewarding sights.

6 months agoMcHugh Peak is a solid hike overall; the first mile is the hardest/steepest but then it gets easier past Grandview. Took just under 4 hours, with a short stop for food, and the views of Anchorage, the Turnagain Arm, and Chugach Mountain range are some of best in this area

6 years agoThis is BS! There is a park access with only 5 parking spaces and a "over flow parking" apx. quarter mile away... ya-no some people think just because there privileged! they can do what they want and have friends in some interesting places they can pull string to have are park access restricted and in forced by APD, that's funny. It's an incredible hiking trail, but with this restricted parking situation because of some stuck up home owner... I can't give it the five stare ratings it deserves, maybe we can all get together and change things back to the way they should be!

3 years agoBeautiful hike above the Anchorage cityscape. Prime for blueberry picking in September and a perfect light to medium hike for the family.

7 months agoLot less crowded than the South side trailhead at McHugh. Very fun trail, love the ridge running. Small lot though, so can fill up fast despite small crowds.
