The freshness of each dish and each ingredient is really next level. I think getting the lunch at the cafe to share is a really good value choice compared to the set dinner if you want to try. Also easier to get seats
This being the famous Alice Waters I had high expectations for our set menu, the food was very good as expected, however I was surprised it wasn’t amazing? yes the ingredients were top notch but the favoring was a little underwhelming. My favorite was the roasted duck entrée. The service was surprisingly weak, we waited for a few minutes before being shown to our table, after sitting down it took 10 minutes before our waiter stopped by to ask for our drinks. I wonder if we would have been happier to eat upstairs in the casual dining room, with lower expectations and the same food.
I've heard alot about this place and I can definitely say it lived up to the hype..
Chez Panisse was a memorable dining experience from start to finish. I loved how the menu highlighted simple ingredients with refined preparation, and every course felt fresh and thoughtfully put together. The service was attentive without being overbearing, and the overall setting had a relaxed, elegant charm.
I was disappointed and won't return. I noted on my reservation there would be one vegan diner. Our waiter made us feel this was an inconvenience and an annoyance, as they are "not a vegan restaurant" though he would ask the chef. I did not wish to make this an issue especially since we were celebrating a birthday with others who were not vegan, but the waiter made it so and did not once come to check on us so we sat there a very long time before asking the bus person if we could have a dessert menu. Also after our desserts were served we told the waiter that we forgot to ask for coffees and he said "well I didn't bring utensils yet either but that doesn't mean I wasn't going to". He obviously had an attitude and this ruined an otherwise enjoyable birthday lunch.
