I was really happy when I first joined especially because of the auto-belays on the rock wall. After an accident, they removed the auto-belays without any notice or communication. It feels like a disproportionate response and something that could have been addressed with better staff supervision, safety checks, and clearer protocols rather than limiting members’ access. Staffing is also an issue, if someone is running a private lesson, there’s no one else available to belay. Management has not been transparent about next steps or taken member concerns seriously, which is disappointing.

I’ve been a member at Chelsea Piers for about two years now and honestly it never gets old. The facility itself is unreal - 150,000 sq ft, a 75-foot pool, the rock wall, the indoor track, the cycling and barre classes… there’s genuinely nothing else like it in NYC. But the thing that keeps me coming back just as much as the equipment is the staff. Mackenzie at the front desk is an absolute gem - always knows your name, always has a good energy going, and actually goes out of her way to help you figure out class bookings or whatever you need. The Hudson River sundecks alone are worth the membership in summer. 10/10.

I had been going to this gym for many months, and recreational climbing with the auto belay was a regular part of my weekly routine. It was one of the main reasons I chose this gym and something I genuinely looked forward to each week. Recently, they changed the rules so now you can no longer use the auto belay independently. You must have a partner there to take you down, and every single climb requires someone else to secure you. This completely defeats the convenience and flexibility that made auto belay so valuable for solo climbers. For people who train alone and rely on climbing as part of their normal fitness routine, this change is extremely frustrating and disappointing. It makes spontaneous workouts almost impossible and takes away a major benefit of the membership. Very unhappy with this new policy.
